The Doctor was worried. The Judoon Commander was

no expert on humanoid body language, but even he could

tell from his companion’s relentless pacing that he was

anxious about the girl.

The Doctor had not wanted to allow her to make this

attempt to gain admittance to the apartment by such a

dangerous route, but he had been outvoted. Nikki had

insisted on going ahead, and the Judoon Commander had

agreed that it was the logical thing to do. The Doctor had

checked and rechecked the safety line that they had made

from bed sheets, and only when he was certain that it

would hold had he opened the window and let Nikki out

onto the ledge.

There had been no sign of life since the tension in the

line had been released as Nikki had tumbled through into

the next door apartment and untied the sheets. The Doctor

had grabbed an empty glass and held it up to the wall,

placing his ear next to it to hear anything that might be

going on.

He shook his head in frustration. ‘Nothing,’ he

reported.

The Judoon Commander grunted an acknowledgement.

‘She is an effective intruder,’ he commented.

The Doctor turned away from the wall, surprised at the

tone in the alien’s voice. Was there a hint of warmth in

that statement? Was the Judoon Commander beginning to

have some kind of emotional attachment to the young

detective?

Perhaps he had misjudged the Judoon race, he

pondered. He felt a little embarrassed to admit it, but it

was very easy to tar an entire species with the same brush.

Bad move, Doctor, he told himself, you should know

better. If even clone races like Sontarans could have

distinct personalities, then alien races like the Khellian

Horde, the Hath and the Judoon were bound to be more

varied. After all, the Doctor thought, I’ve met Cybermen
